Back in elementary school I had a totally cool and slightly crazy science teacher. She used to take us on field trips to the woods and fields near the school. In spring, during the mating season of the Blackbird, the males would stand in one spot and sing their song, declaring their territory. The teacher stood under one of the trees and whistled, echoing the exact song of the Blackbird. The Blackbird sang, and she sang back to him. It was like they were having a conversation. It’s one of my fondest childhood memories, and even today, occasionally, I whistle the Blackbird’s song.
